“Chanctonbury”, an Original Watercolor Painting

An original watercolor painting on paper by William Hyams, British artist 1878-1952, “Chanctonbury” (West Sussex, England) scene of a farmstead with sheep in the foreground, a lake to the left, to the rear lies a copse of trees at the hill top, signed in the lower left corner front, 9 1/4″ x 14 1/4″, CA number 3931, CA purchased from a Scottish auction house fall of 2023.
“Chanctonbury” is the ring of trees planted on the remains of an Iron Age fort on Chanctonbury hill on the south downs, West Sussex.
A old Aldridge Bros. label indicates the title, artist and medium.
A second label indicates one of the owners of this work: Miss S.M.E. Sheldon, The Tile House, 49 Wilbury Avenue, Hove, E. Sussex, BN3 6GH, Tel: (0273) 779944.
The painting has been cleaned, rematted in Antique White Museum matboard, lined, Conservation Clear Glass, museum backing, framed in 3/4″ antiqued gold moulding.
