Extraordinarily Fine Antique English PERIOD Geo. III Inlaid bookmatched flame or crotch mahogany Hepplewhite style serpentine Sideboard with exceptional satinwood and boxwood inlays throughout (see images). The brasses are antique. There appears to have formerly been a brass gallery at the rear of the top which was professionally removed many years ago and professionally filled in – only mentioned for accuracy. The sideboard has various cellarette drawers for wine and cooled liquids and a very rare “necessaire” cupboard door on the left side of the sideboard where a chamberpot was placed if used during dinner (after their guests relieved themselves behind a folding panelled screen). The chamberpot was then removed once the guests retired to another room after dinner. Please note the hand-chamfered shaping of the doors and the serpentine shapes of the sideboard which were very difficult to do in the period. There have been a few veneer patches along the facing edge of the top over the years and again, only mentioned for accuracy of condition (and illustrated).
This sideboard is in gorgeous, age-appropriate condition.
26″ deep at the ends of the sideboard and 28″ deep in the center
