The 405 project refers to the flow of movement, the path, the road. It is through the journey along the road that the human being (re)constructs the territory, understands, organizes his environment and, in short, discovers. Developed in the USA during a fruitful 3-month home exchange with a couple of artists, the hospitality and mutual trust between strangers (now great friends) have made possible the development of these pieces that emphasize the road. The name of the project points to the busy Interstate-405, which passing through the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area is one of the major highways in Southern California and has earned its place as one of the most congested highways in the world. The intersections, the encounters and the importance of the visual and metaphorical aspects of the road as well as the physical experience of movement, where temporal and spatial dimensions run hand in hand are essential elements to understand the true nature of travel and, consequently, hospitality. The project is realized from clay slab in the residency program at CSULB’s Center of Contemporary Ceramics, forcing its geometry and scale through an unusual construction method that pushes the material to its limits.
